With construction scheduled to begin in the summer of 2012, Cabela's expects the store to open in spring 2013. It will be located at the intersection of Sterling Lyon Parkway and Kenaston Boulevard as part of a new retail development that will include IKEA and other retailers. Currently, the Winnipeg store is in the Polo Park district, approximately seven kilometers from the new site.

Cabela's will create up to an additional 110 full- and part-time positions by relocating the Winnipeg store. Currently, the Winnipeg store has about 100 full- and part-time employees. Cabela's expects the new location to employ up to 210 full- and part-time employees. Most will come from Winnipeg and the surrounding area.

Cabela's typically attracts as staffers experienced outdoor recreationalists, who join the Cabela's family of employees known for their passion for and knowledge of the outdoors as well as excellent customer service skills.

"This location is better situated and better sized to serve the market area, which abounds with thousands of loyal Cabela's customers," said Cabela's Chief Executive Officer Tommy Millner. "It's a huge undertaking, but the new store will be more fitting and will give the people of Winnipeg a memorable retail experience each time they walk through the door."

The building's exterior will reflect Cabela's traditional store model with log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. A large glass storefront will allow customers to view much of the store's interior as they approach the building. The inside will feature Cabela's next-generation layout, designed to surround customers in an outdoor experience with trophy wildlife and outdoor memorabilia displays. The store also will feature a Gun Library, Bargain Cave and Fudge Shop.
