40 Years in the Making
In 1983, Tim Leatherman started his journey to create the world’s first pliers-based multi-tool. Four decades later, Leatherman is still pushing forward into the future to stay true to Tim’s spirit of perseverance, ingenuity, and innovation. But without you, tools are just steel. In your hands, they save the day. So, cheers to you for making Leatherman what they are today.

THE LEATHERMAN STORY
Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Leatherman® is committed to bringing you the best multipurpose products to help you solve expected and unexpected problems in everyday life. Their journey started 40 years ago with the world’s first pliers-based multi-tool built by their founder, Tim Leatherman (Yes, there really is a Mr. Leatherman!).
Cabela’s was the first company to stock Tim Leatherman’s revolutionary tool back in 1983, and it’s been a long and prosperous partnership since.
1975

Tim Leatherman and his wife travel to Europe and find themselves without tools to battle leaky hotel plumbing and a finicky European car during minor roadside repairs. Tim has the idea to create a tool that combines the versatility of a scout knife while including pliers.
1978

Tim works on his prototype for 3 years and files for a patent. Upon approaching companies to sell his multi-tool idea, he is shut down because it didn’t fall within the parameters of a knife or tool. Tim continues to face rejection of his idea for another 3.5 years.
1983

Tim and his college-friend turned business-partner, Steve Berliner, receive their first order for 500 tools from Cabela’s and launch their first Leatherman tool. In their first year of business, they hope to sell 4,000 PST (Pocket Survival Tools). Instead, they sell over 30,000.
1993

Over 10 years, Tim and Steve sell over 1 million Pocket Survival Tools from their home base in Oregon, where they continue to make and test all of their products.
2019

In 2019, Leatherman reinvents the multi-tool category with the introduction of Leatherman FREE, a collection of tools that takes its users’ experience to the next level.
2021

In Spring 2021, Leatherman launches the Bond. Inspired by Tim Leatherman’s original PST multi-tool, Bond combines minimal design with 14 highly functional tools for the job at hand.
