Boating Etiquette 101: Courtesies on the Water

Make the right kind of waves when on and around water. For recreational boating, there is a customary code of accepted behaviour to exercise safety and maintain ease of navigation among the fellow boaters.
The Top Rules to Respectful Boating
  • Boating etiquette starts at the dock. Prepare your boat and necessary equipment before getting in position to launch.
  • It is recommended to stay at least 200 feet from the shoreline and other boaters/swimmers to avoid danger and disruptions to others’ experience on the water.
  • Keep music at a decent level to avoid disturbance to others and help the operator hear the spotters.
  • Leave no trace by disposing any trash responsibly. Respect and take care of the water you love so much.
  • Respect and follow the rules if the body of the water has speed limits or slow-no-wake restrictions. You will be responsible for any damage you cause to other people’s property.
  • Avoid any collision by simply following the waterway markers and navigation rules.
  • Always be prepared with the safety rules of your craft and ensure your guests are aware as well.
  • Set a good example by knowing and following the provincial and local laws for the body of water.
  • At the fuel dock, fill up your tank, pay your bill and move out of the way. If you require additional supplies, relocate your boat. Remember to run your blower before starting.
  • Enter the mooring area at a slow speed to avoid creating big wakes that could disrupt other anchored boats.
  • When mooring, observe how the first boat is set and follow the tone. Mimic how they tie, line required and the distance you allow between the other boats. The busier the boat, the more space is recommended for yourself.
  • Extend a warm greeting to your fellow anglers, boaters, and people on the banks to create a positive and friendly atmosphere.
