Find Your Footing: Tips for Getting the Right Hiking Boots Fitting

Mind the swell

Try on hiking boots or shoes in the evening. Feet usually swell slightly throughout the day, so it’s a good idea to test them out when your feet are at their largest.

Toe-test

Toes should be snug, but not too tight that you can’t wiggle your toes.

Be materialistic

Pay attention to the specific material and fabrics used in the hikers you are interested in. Check if they can encounter the conditions you expect during your hikes and adventure activities.

Material types
  • Synthetics: Easy to break-in, lightweight, dries quickly.
  • Split-grain leather: Abrasion resistant, water resistant and has natural make this plain text.
  • Synthetic/leather mix: Breathable and durable.
  • Full-grain leather: Durable, water resistant, less breathable and heavy.

Merino Wool

Canadians know that spring weather can be erratic at best, and we need clothing that can withstand whatever Mother Nature throws our way. Merino wool provides the perfect solution for our unpredictable climate. Merino wool is sustainable, naturally moisture-wicking and has a bacteriostatic composition, which means water is locked away and odours are stopped in their tracks for comfortable all-day wear.

Polyester

Polyester is lightweight, durable, breathable, and dries fast as it absorbs almost no water. However, it can trap odor and bacteria overtime, requiring regular washing. The latest gear include antimicrobial treatments to reduce the issue and becomes a perfect option for outdoor enthusiasts for outdoor high-intensity activities. While tough, polyester can also be less resistant to heat and friction when compared with Merino wool.

HOW TO CHOOSE A RAIN JACKET

ACTIVITY

The type of jacket you should choose depends largely on what activity you will be doing.

A waterproof hunting jacket, for instance, will have different features and fit than a hiking jacket or one for everyday wear.

WATERPROOF VS. WATER RESISTANT

A garment can only be 100% waterproof when the seams are all sealed and the fabric has a waterproof treatment or membrane.

A water-resistant garment can have some or no seam sealing and have a treatment that could wear off over time.

EXTRA FEATURES

Enjoy the convenience and versatility of our water-resistant products, with removable liners, hoods, vents, elastic waists, packable solutions and more.

CARING FOR YOUR RAINWEAR

Waterproof jackets should not be washed using a regular detergent. NixWax Tech Wash-In cleans your jacket while leaving the water repellency intact longer. Using this process to wash your jacket should keep the jacket waterproof twice as long as regular detergent.

In addition, NixWax Tx Direct Wash-In is recommended to ensure a continued waterproof product. These products are key to maintaining the long life of your jackets.
